Cobb Children's Theatre

In 2000, I returned to a community theater company that I had been a part of as a teenager. The company targets young people from the ages of 11 to 25 and teaches them theater - performance and technical.

I had been a part of the company as a teenager, but now returned as an adult to direct, musically direct, design sets, and eventually, as their site designer.

The original site was table-based, but made use of ASP and an Access database to keep information fresh and updated. I had even set up a backend for performers from the company's thirty year history to keep in touch with one another.

The company needs a new site that is more automated and updatable. The table-based design also had to go. My best friend (the sites administrator) and I are redesigning the site to be more current and modular by utilizing CSS, PHP, and XML.

The site is currently in the concept stages.

In my free time, I am a musician for a local theater company in Dunwoody. After a show that I played in the Summer of 2006, the Artistic Director for theater approached me about keeping the site updated. The previous webmaster had gotten too busy, and he didn’t know how to update the site himself. I agreed to update the site on a regular basis and asked for the current html and image files.

After analyzing the site, I realized that it was in dire need of clean up before I could start updating – the image files in the gallery were 1.5 megs a piece, the html was a mess, and there were font and color tags on every element of every page.

I restructured the table-based site using xhtml and css, optimized all the images, created a new site map, and even added some javascript functionality to the gallery and header images. I even offered to do photography for the theater to add new photos to the site.

Since I’ve been doing the site, I have redesigned the whole site, added multiple photos galleries, profile pages for the In-Residence team and Board of Directors, and even added a pdf season subscription form. We plan to implement a new php-based message board, as well as sound and Flash video clips in the near future.

AquaMania Inc.

AquaMania Inc. is a complete pool resource company that services the Metro Atlanta area. The owner had a site, but could not get in touch with the original designer to make updates to the Flash site. Out of frustration, he called and asked if I was willing to update his site.

Without the native Flash files, I told him that I would be unable to do any updates, but I was willing to redesign the site utilizing xhtml, css, php, and current web standards. Since it was the busiest time of the year for him, he was willing to do anything to get the site up and running.

Even though I’m a Flash designer, I’m not fond of doing an entire site in Flash if a majority of the visitors to the site could possibly not have the most current Flash plugin. So, I redesigned the site, added a few Flash banners, created an employment form with a php backend, and even took some photographs of the pools he had built or renovated.

Once things slow down for the business, we plan on implementing a full php backend system that will allow the owner to make updates to the site, add and delete his own digital photos, and a secure payroll system for the lifeguards in his employ.

V-Office

V-Office is a privately held company specializing in virtual technical solutions for SOHO (Small Office Home Office) and small to medium-size businesses. One of the current owners is a friend of someone I had recently done a site for. He had a logo, but didn’t have a site. I was currently making the transition from table-based to css-based design. He forbid me to use tables and required all cascading style sheets.

It was definitely a challenge, but it also taught me a great deal about the new direction of web design. I have since started teaching css design techniques to my classes and using it in my own designs.
